Richard J Oakley Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Date of Notice: Monday, February 2, 2015. Courier Post. Richard J. "Cappy" Oakley, 65, of Medford Lakes, NJ, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at home. Born in Jersey City, NJ, Richard resided in Medford Lakes for the last 30 years. He was a 1967 graduate of the River Dell High School, and a 1971 graduate of State University of New York Maritime College at Ft. Schuyler. Richard lived his boyhood dream by becoming a Merchant Marine Tug Boat Captain. He also taught Earth Science at Sterling High School for 20 years. Richard's passion was the Boy Scouts, and he attained the status of Eagle Scout at the age of 15. He went on to become a Pack Master for Cub Pack 48, and Assistant Scout Master for Troop 48 in Medford Lakes. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Julie (nee Weiss) Oakley; his loving children and their spouses, Andrew and Amber Oakley, Geoffrey T. and Colleen Oakley, and Lauren and Adam Wells; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ardeth and Robert Dotti, and Gwynned and Thomas Kelly; He was Cappy to five grandchildren, Alexander, Ainsley, Connor, Emma and Theodore; and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, from 6-8PM, at the Mathis Funeral Home, 58 N. Main St., Medford, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at 11AM, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 1 Winchester Ct., Tabernacle, NJ. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Richard's memory to Boy Scout Troop 48, 178 Nahma Trail, Medford Lakes, NJ 08055.
