"Hal" Walter, 82, of the Leisuretowne section of Southampton, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015, at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mt. Holly, NJ. Born in Camden, NJ, Hal was raised in Westmont, NJ. He and his wife Mary Ann resided in Medford Lakes for 50 years before moving to Leisuretowne over 3 years ago. Hal graduated from Haddonfield High School, where he was known as "Tubby". An avid sports player and fan, Tubby was inducted into their High School Hall of Fame for excelling at Football, Basketball and Baseball. He was offered four full scholarships for football, but on the night of his high school graduation, Hal was drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates Professional Baseball Team, and he chose to play for them. He subsequently was drafted by the U.S. Army and joined the U.S. Air Force after becoming a free agent from the Pittsburg Pirates due to the draft. He proudly served our country during the Korean War, and was one of the last Americans to be above the 38th parallel. He was a longtime baseball umpire and basketball official, and was a member of the SJUN, NJSIAA and the IAABO. Hal was a member of the CWA, and retired after 42 years from AT&T in Pennsauken, NJ. Hal and his wife vacationed 41 times in Disney World. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Ann (nee Murphy) Walter; his five loving children, Linda Leigh Nathan (John), Brenda Sue Denny (Robert, Jr.), Harold Walter, Jr. (Gail), Kelly Anne Burke (James), and Ruthann Foley (Timothy); his 13 adoring grandchildren, Justin Nathan, Jeremy Nathan, Amanda Lyn Nathan, Robert G. Denny III (Colleen), Kyle A. Denny (Jenni), Ronald Walter, Emily Walter, Raymond Walter, KatieLynn Burke, MeganRae Burke, Deanna Foley, David Foley and Susann Foley; two great grandchildren, Gunnar and Lillian Denny; and his longtime friends, Pat and Peggy Park. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, from 6-8PM, and again on Thursday, March 19, from 10-11AM, at the Mathis Funeral Home, 58 N. Main St., Medford, NJ. Funeral services will follow at 11AM, at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Bethel Memorial Park, Pennsauken, NJ.
