Date of Notice: Thursday, November 15, 2012. Burlington County Times, Courier Post. Christopher Joseph O'Connor, 61, of Southampton, passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mt. Holly. Born in Grafton, New South Wales, Australia, Christopher resided in Tabernacle and Southampton for the last 29 years. He served in the U.S. Navy between 1970 and 1978, serving on the USS Corral Sea (70-74), and the USS America, while doing two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He received the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his honorable discharge, Christopher was Post Commander (1999-2000) and Life Member of the VFW Post 7677 in Medford. He was the Commander of the Cooties, and All American District Commander from 2003-2004. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Mary of the Lakes Council 6520 in Medford, and a former member of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club as a Star Fleet sailor. Christopher worked at St. Mary of the Lakes Church for 20 years, comforting those with a comfortable and clean place for reflection and prayer. Son of the late Richard J. O'Connor; brother of the late Catherine M. O'Connor Toomey; he is survived by his son Jeremiah J. O'Connor; his mother Rita B. O'Connor; his brother and sister-in-law, Dominic T. and Lisa Ann O'Connor; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Anne T. and James Flinn, and Gabrielle O. and Gregory Pyle; and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call on Friday, November 16, 2012, from 7-9PM, at the Mathis Funeral Home, 58 N. Main St., Medford. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 17, at 10:30AM, at St. Mary of the Lakes R.C. Church, 40 Jackson Rd., Medford. Interment will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012, in the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Christopher's memory to the Disabled American Veteran s, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250; or the Wounded Warriors, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
