March 25, 1934 - March 13, 2012
Date of Notice: Tuesday, March 13, 2012; Burlington County Times, Central Record Christa Melcher Irick, 77, died peacefully Sunday surrounded by her family and her friends at Medford Leas. Born March 25, 1934, in Philadelphia, her parents decided to return to their native Germany when she was four years old. They were not allowed to return to America until she was sixteen. Christa grew up in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in the town of Oberweier. She rarely spoke of her experiences growing up in the war torn country and it wasn't until her children were grown that she mentioned small details in passing. These accepted facts of her life shocked her children, but also made them realize that Christa was more than just their mom. She was an amazing, resilient woman who had survived a way of life filled with pain, fear and uncertainty. She'd overcome those experiences and grown to be a compassionate, patient young woman who was devoted to her family, her friends, her church and her music. Music was Christa's passion from an early age. When she returned to America, she continued her studies in Philadelphia and it was through her piano lessons that she caught the eye of a handsome young tenor, Carlton Irick. They were married on December 15, 1956 and moved to his family home in Vincentown, NJ. Christa resigned from her job writing obituaries for The Bulletin to care for her ailing parents and raise her children. Although she worked part time from home offering private lessons on the piano and organ, and played weekly at Trinity Episcopal Church in Vincentown, Christa devoted herself entirely to her family until her youngest child was in high school before returning to work. Earning the title Master Chef, Christa found employment with a number of fine area establishments, but truly made her mark by designing and running the restaurant at the Strawbridge and Clothier store in Burlington, NJ, until it closed. She worked as a collections agent for Federation Credit until July of 2003 when she retired to care for Carlton and her brother, Robert, who'd both been diagnosed with cancer. A few years after their passing in 2004, she took the advice of dear friends, Dottie and Lois, and moved to Medford Leas to start life anew. Once there, Christa was surrounded by friends, new and old, a caring and dedicated staff, and her gardens and birds. Christa is predeceased by her husband, Carlton Moore Irick, parents, Karl and Gertrude Melcher, and her brother F. Robert Melcher. She is survived by her children, William Irick, Christa and her husband, Ben Menzo, Alicia Irick-Cohen and Christopher and his wife, Sharon; her stepchildren, Noel and her husband, Peter Hill, Dorothea and her husband, Robert Cropper, and John Irick; her cousins, Laura Heck, Josef Melcher and his wife, Anita, and Arno Melcher and his wife, Christa; as well as numerous grandchildren. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, March 15, 2012, from 7-9PM, at the Mathis Funeral Home, 58 N. Main St., Medford. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 16, at 10AM, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 18 Mill St., Vincentown. Interment will follow in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Mt. Holly. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Christa's name to Trinity Episcopal Church, 18 Mill St, Vincentown, NJ 08088.
